Blended learning is an approach to facilitating a course in which parts of the course are facilitated ‘face to face’ in a brick and mortar environment and other parts are facilitated online with learners controlling time / place and pace they will study these parts of the course.
Five of the benefits of blended learning – flexibility (flexible access to learning resources), active learning, personalisation, learner control, feedback.
Flexibility. Get learners to search the internet to find the answer to a very specific question before a f2f session, and compete to see who gets the best answer.
Active learning. Ask learners to work in small groups to develop a slide to present to their peers, which explains what could go wrong in a procedure/technique/skill they have just learned about.
Personalisation. Give the learners access to a relevant image database they can search to find suitable illustrations for some work they have to hand in.
Learner control. Ask each learner to browse YouTube to find a good video that’s relevant to the topic they are currently learning.
Feedback.  Prepare an MCQ quiz using a question you have put to learners previously, and using previous wrong answers as the choices, along with the correct answer, and ask them to pick the best one. They may come across these inappropriate ways of thinking among their peers, so they need to be able to spot that they are wrong.
The properties of digital technologies are used to improve motivation, personalised self-pacing, learning outcomes, active learning, inclusion and flexibility for working students.
The changing nature of teaching with digital technology.

A few of the ways in which colleagues are using blended learning:
  • To enrich the classroom experience to bring in more kinds of active learning
  • To make use of existing digital resources to enhance the learning activity
  • To use online learning for learners to prepare themselves for work in class or on site so they can use that time more productively
  • To use online learning to support them in following up on what they did in practice
  • To make it easier for learners to study flexibly alongside work, enabling them to be much more time efficient
